New Delhi: India's parliament faced a major security breach as proceedings were disrupted by two individuals who set off a smoke canister inside the legislature, resulting in a brief halt to parliamentary activities. The incident led to the arrest of the two disruptors and two others detained outside the building.

Official footage from the session captured one man shouting slogans and leaping over tables between astonished lawmakers before activating a device that released yellow smoke into the chamber. The motives behind the disruption and how the individuals evaded security checks remain unclear, with New Delhi police yet to provide details on the incident.

After a short adjournment, parliament resumed its session, with Speaker Om Birla informing lawmakers that four people had been arrested for the disruption. Birla assured that a thorough investigation was underway, and he stated that the Delhi police had received necessary directions.

Despite concerns raised by lawmakers about the security of India's new parliament, inaugurated earlier this year by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Birla emphasized that there was no need for worry, assuring that the released smoke was not hazardous to human health.

The disruption coincided with the 22nd anniversary of a previous attack on the parliament's former location in New Delhi. On this day in 2001, five gunmen attacked, resulting in the deaths of at least eight security personnel and a gardener during a parliamentary session. Prime Minister Modi paid tribute to the victims earlier in the day, acknowledging their courage and sacrifice in the face of danger.
